Costa Rica
Calling all adventure-lovers, wildlife-watchers and free spirits – if Costa Rica isn’t on your list already, it’s time you took a look.
From exhilarating zip lines and vertigo-inducing treetop walkways, to top-notch water sports and rainforest retreats, you could easily spend a lifetime exploring this small slice of Central America. And that’s before you meet the resident turtles, monkeys and toucans.

Renowned for its lush rainforests and tropical beaches, Costa Rica is home to some of the world’s most fascinating wildlife, from howler monkeys to hummingbirds, toucans to turtles.
One of the best places to spot all these and more is the gorgeous Tortuguero National Park, on the country’s Caribbean coast.
Covering 200,000 acres, its beaches, lagoons, swamps and forests are home to an incredible array of wildlife, including endangered species such as great green macaws, manatees, tapirs, jaguars, and of course, sea turtles. In fact, it’s the turtles which give this stunning natural sanctuary both its name and its fame.
Tortuguero’s 35 km-long beach is the most important nesting site in the Western Atlantic Ocean for the green sea turtle. Plan your trip between July and September for a chance to join a guided nocturnal tour to catch a glimpse of these wonderful creatures as they come ashore to lay their eggs.
While you’re in Tortuguero, be sure to explore the many winding waterways by boat, stopping off at a local village for a taste of Caribbean culture before tucking into cocktails and bocas (think Costa Rican canapés) back at your lodge.
If you can drag yourself from the sights and sounds of the rainforest, a short trip inland will take you to new heights.
Costa Rica Sky Adventures Park is a playground for thrill-seekers. After an exhilarating start, zip-lining through the rainforest canopy, the Sky Tram gondola will whisk you over the treetops to the dizzying hanging bridges of the Sky Walk, with its heart-stopping crossings and extraordinary views.
When it’s time to slow the heart rate and catch your breath, make a break for the beach, this time on the Pacific coast.
Surf aficionados should head for Mal País and Santa Teresa on the southern top of the Península de Nicoya, while Playa Copal and Bahía Salinas near the Nicaraguan border offer wind, waves and miles of unspoilt views for kitesurfers.
